Whether you’re new to woodworking or an experienced professional, it’s always a good idea to have wood filler at hand. Wood can be unpredictable, and no matter how careful you may be, mistakes can always happen. You’ll need to know how to use wood filler for when that time comes. This guide will instruct you on using wood filler effectively and efficiently to ensure the best finish to your wood projects.
The first step to using wood filler is to mix the substance. Wood filler has a tendency to separate if sat stationary for too long.
Using a putty knife, mix the filler until you have a consistent and smooth texture. You’ll know it’s mixed well enough when it is a single colour throughout and has a peanut-butter like texture.
Now it’s time to apply the wood filler to the required area.
Take the putty knife you used to mix the material and use it to spread the substance onto the wood.
If you’re using a petroleum-based filler, then you’ll need to work quickly as this material dries fast. If you’re using a water-based filler then you can take a little bit more time.
When spread adequately, make sure to scrape off the excess carefully. Make sure not to accidentally push the knife into the crack you have just filled.
Using your finger, further press the filler into the wood until you’re satisfied with how the crack looks. Wipe off the final excess from the wood and wipe it onto a scrap piece of wood . Do the same with the putty knife.
To clean your fingers and knife, simply rinse under a tap and dry your hands thoroughly. If you used a petroleum filler, you’ll need to use mineral spirits to clean your knife and fingers.
Before sanding, you should wait around 30 minutes to an hour.
Now, take your high grit sandpaper and sand down the wood filler until it’s smooth to the wood. Do your best to rub it with the direction of the wood grain to help it give the same feel as the wood when your project is complete.
Some fillers can dry quite hard, so sanding can be difficult but with a little strength it should look as good as new. When finished, wipe away the dust with a dry cloth.
Once you’re satisfied with how the filler has turned out, it’s time to stain or add a protective layer to your wood. Staining your wood will even out the colour so that you can’t see the difference between the wood and filler colours.
There should be a seamless transition from the filler to wood. However, a varied colour may show as the filler will absorb the stain differently. Adding a protective finish on top of the stain will also help make the colour differences match up more perfectly.
